Wind direction & fetch
Two days, both 15 knots. One is a pleasant sail; the other is a spray-in-the-face beating that has you turning back. The difference usually isn't the speed — it's the direction the wind is blowing, and how much open water it crossed to reach you.
Fetch: the runway waves need to build
Fetch is the distance of open water the wind blows across before it reaches you. The longer the fetch, the more time and room the wind has to pile up bigger, more organized waves. A 15-knot wind blowing across two miles of protected bay barely raises a ripple. That same 15-knot wind blowing across forty miles of open lake builds a serious, steep sea.
This is why direction matters so much on the Great Lakes. Each launch sits on a particular shoreline, and the fetch in front of it depends entirely on which way the wind is coming from:
- A wind blowing off your shore (offshore) has almost no fetch near the beach — the water right at the ramp is often deceptively flat.
- A wind blowing onto your shore (onshore) has crossed the whole width of the lake — maximum fetch, maximum waves, right where you launch.
The offshore-wind trap
Beware the calm-looking launch. When the wind blows offshore, the water by the ramp looks inviting — flat and sheltered. But head out a mile or two and you cross into the full fetch, where the waves are steep and building. Worse, an offshore wind is pushing you away from safety: if your engine quits, the wind carries you out into deeper, rougher water, not back to the beach. Small boats, kayaks and paddleboards get blown out this way every season. Judge the day by the open water, not the shoreline.
Lee shores and where it gets rough
A lee shore is a shoreline the wind is blowing onto. It's where the waves are biggest and where a disabled boat gets pushed — into shallows, breakwalls, and surf. Harbor entrances on a lee shore are especially treacherous: waves stack up and steepen as they hit shallow water at the channel mouth, so a manageable open-lake wave can become a breaking one right where you're trying to thread the piers. If you're coming back to a lee-shore harbor in building wind, time your entrance and don't dawdle in the breaking zone.
Great Lakes specifics worth knowing
- The long axis is the dangerous one. Lake Erie runs roughly east–west, so a strong west or southwest wind has the entire length of the lake to build waves — western-basin boaters know a hard southwester means business. On a north–south lake like Lake Michigan, north and south winds do the same.
- Shallow water steepens everything. Lake Erie's western basin is famously shallow, which makes its waves short, steep and closely spaced — nastier than their height suggests. Shallow water anywhere turns swell into breakers.
- A wind shift can flip your day. A front that swings the wind from south to northwest can turn a sheltered morning into an exposed, building afternoon at the very same spot. Watch the forecast for the word "becoming."

Every spot page shows the wind direction next to its speed, and the hour-by-hour table draws a little arrow for each hour showing where the wind is blowing to. The "wind read" note interprets what the current direction means for that specific shoreline — whether it's an offshore breeze flattening the ramp or an onshore wind stacking up the fetch. Use the weather map's wind and wave layers to see the fetch for yourself, and check a nearby port on the same lake if your launch is on the wrong side of the wind.
