Cold-water safety on the Great Lakes
On the Great Lakes, the most dangerous number on a calm spring day isn't the wind — it's the water temperature. Cold water kills more boaters than storms do, and it does it fast. Here's what you need to know.
The short version: Water below about 60°F (15°C) can cause cold shock, and water below 50°F (10°C) is immediately life-threatening if you go in without protection. Great Lakes water stays in that range from fall through late spring — and the surface can be dangerously cold even when the air feels like summer.
Why the lakes stay so cold
The Great Lakes are deep, and they turn over slowly. Long after the air has warmed up in May and June, the water is still holding winter. Wind can also drive warm surface water offshore and pull deep, frigid water up to the surface in a matter of hours — a process called upwelling — so a beach that was 70°F yesterday can be 48°F today. A sunny 80°F afternoon does not mean warm water. That mismatch is exactly what lulls people into going out underdressed.
What cold water actually does to you — the 1-10-1 principle
Cold-water researchers describe an immersion in three stages, remembered as 1-10-1:
- 1 minute — cold shock. The instant you hit cold water you gasp involuntarily, your heart rate and blood pressure spike, and you hyperventilate. If your head is underwater during that first gasp, you can drown in seconds. This first minute is the deadliest, and it's why a life jacket that keeps your head up is non-negotiable. Your job in minute one is simply to not panic and get your breathing under control.
- 10 minutes — meaningful movement. You have roughly ten minutes of useful muscle control before cold steals your coordination and grip. Use them deliberately: get back to the boat, get as much of your body out of the water as possible, or get hold of anything that floats. After this window your hands and arms simply stop working — you cannot climb a ladder or hold a line, no matter how hard you try.
- 1 hour — before hypothermia. Contrary to the myth, you typically have around an hour before hypothermia renders you unconscious, if you're wearing a life jacket that keeps you afloat and your head clear. Without one, you're gone long before hypothermia is even a factor. This is the single strongest argument for the life jacket: it buys you the whole hour.
Dress for the water, not the air
The rule experienced cold-water boaters live by: if the sum of the air and water temperatures in Fahrenheit is under about 120, dress for immersion. On a 60°F air / 48°F water spring day, that sum is 108 — you should be dressed to survive going in, not for the sunshine. In practice that means:
- A life jacket worn, not stowed. Cold hands can't don a PFD in the water.
- A wetsuit or, better, a drysuit when the water is genuinely cold. Ordinary "waterproof" rain gear does nothing once you're submerged.
- Layers you can move in, and a way to signal — a whistle on the PFD, a waterproof VHF, and ideally a means of self-rescue like a re-boarding ladder.
Prevent the fall in the first place
Almost every cold-water tragedy starts with an unexpected trip into the water — a slip while standing to relieve yourself, a wake from a passing boat, a snagged anchor, a dog lunging. Stay low and keep three points of contact when you move around, kill the engine when someone's near the gunwale, and never boat cold water alone if you can avoid it. File a float plan so someone ashore knows when to raise the alarm.

If someone does go in: get them out horizontally if you can (being hauled upright can cause a dangerous blood-pressure drop after a long immersion), keep them still, remove wet clothing, insulate them, and call for help early — the effects of cold can keep worsening even after rescue.
